Clear barcode labels: when transparent labels work for barcodes
A barcode needs contrast. On a clear label the product becomes the background, so here's when that works and what to do when it doesn't.
Clear labels look great on glass jars and premium packaging, so it's tempting to put the barcode on one too. Sometimes that works perfectly. Sometimes the scanner refuses. The difference is contrast.
Why contrast matters
A scanner reads the difference between dark bars and the light gaps between them. On a white label, the gaps are the white paper. On a clear label, the gaps are whatever is behind the label: the glass, the product, the box.
When clear barcode labels work
- On white or very light packaging: white boxes, white plastic tubs, light card.
- On clear containers with light contents: water, white cream, pale honey.
- When the bars are printed in a dark, solid colour, usually black.
When they don't
- On dark packaging or contents: red wine, coffee, dark sauces, black boxes.
- On curved glass with reflections, which can confuse some scanners.
- When the code is printed small or with light ink.
The fixes
- White underprint: professionally printed clear labels can have a white panel printed behind the barcode only. The rest of the label stays transparent.
- Move the barcode to a light part of the pack, or onto a small separate white label on the back or base.
- Test on the real product: stick a sample on the actual jar, fill it, and scan it with a handheld scanner and a phone.
Size and quiet zones
Keep EAN-13 codes close to their nominal size, and leave clear space on both sides of the bars. More in how to make barcode labels.
Getting them made
We print clear labels on a roll, with a white underprint where you need it, and plain barcode labels for thermal printers. Tell us the container and its contents when you ask for a quote.
FAQ
Can you put a barcode on a clear label?
Yes, if the background behind the label is light. On dark containers or contents, use a white underprint or a separate white barcode label.
What is a white underprint?
A white layer printed only behind part of a clear label, such as the barcode, so it has a light background to scan against.
How do I know if my clear barcode label will scan?
Test a sample on the real, filled product with both a handheld scanner and a phone before ordering in volume.
