Thermal printer printing blank, faded or misaligned labels? The fixes
Printer churning out blank labels, skipping every other one or printing too light? Most of the time it's a two-minute fix.
A misbehaving thermal printer is rarely broken. Nine times out of ten the cause is the roll, a driver setting or a calibration nobody ran. Here are the usual symptoms, most common first.
Labels come out completely blank
- The paper isn't thermal: scratch the label with a fingernail. No black mark? It isn't direct thermal stock and needs a ribbon.
- The roll is the wrong way round: the printable side has to face the print head. Check the winding direction.
- The printer is in thermal transfer mode with no ribbon: switch it to “direct thermal” in the driver.
Every other label is blank
The classic. The driver thinks the label is bigger than it is.
- Set the paper size in the driver to exactly match the roll (for example 4 x 6 in / 100 x 150 mm).
- Calibrate the printer (see below).
- Check the PDF doesn't have an empty second page.
The print is faded or grey
- Raise the darkness setting in the driver a step at a time.
- Lower the print speed: slower means more heat per dot.
- Clean the print head with isopropyl alcohol, printer off and head cooled down.
The print is shifted or cut off
- Recalibrate after every roll change.
- For A4 PDFs, use “fit to page” or crop to the label.
- Check the offset settings if you're using label software.
Vertical white lines
A dirty or worn print head leaves fixed white streaks. Clean it first; if the lines stay in the same place, some heating dots are worn out.
Calibrating a Zebra printer
- Zebra ZD411, ZD421, ZD621: hold PAUSE + CANCEL for 2 seconds to start auto-calibration.
- Zebra ZD220, ZD230, GK420d: hold FEED until the status light flashes twice, then let go.
On TSC, Godex and other brands, calibration usually starts from the feed button or the driver utility; your model's manual has the exact sequence.
After calibrating, the printer feeds one or two labels. That's normal. Our thermal labels have consistent die-cutting and clean gaps, which makes detection easier.
FAQ
Why is my thermal printer skipping every other label?
The paper size in the driver doesn't match the roll, or the printer isn't calibrated. Set the exact size and recalibrate.
How do I clean a thermal print head?
With the printer off and the head cool, wipe it with a cotton bud or cleaning pen dampened with isopropyl alcohol, then let it dry for a few seconds.
How do I calibrate a Zebra ZD421?
Hold PAUSE and CANCEL together for 2 seconds. The printer measures the labels and feeds one or two.
